How To: Configure a Cloud Firewall

Reading Time: 2 minutes

While Liquid Web Linux servers always have either APF or CSF firewalls installed, Cloud servers can also have an external firewall put in front of them, at no additional charge. A Cloud Firewall provides an extra layer of protection on an already secure server. Here's how to set one up:

Enabling a Basic Firewall

In your manage interface, click on the server you wish to add the firewall to. Then click the Network tab for that server.

The Cloud Basic Firewall lets you open up default ports of common services through a simple checkbox interface. If you choose this option, make sure that you check the boxes for all the services that you will be using. Failing to check a service will prevent you from accessing that service.

Configuring an Advanced Firewall

While the Basic firewall is perfect for a server with default configurations, not all servers use default settings. For these types of servers, the Cloud Advanced firewall gives you complete control over all traffic headed toward your server. By default, the advanced firewall denies all incoming traffic, so you have to explicitly open all the ports that your server will need to work correctly.

Once you have set the firewall for your server to your exacting needs, you can save that configuration to reuse on other servers:

Remember that any changes you make to your advanced firewall also need to be made to the APF or CSF firewall on your server. If you run into trouble while setting up any Cloud Firewall, simply disable it temporarily as your server's firewalls will protect it during the transition.
